Massive hikes in the costs of insuring a vehicle, the rising numbers of uninsured and unlicensed drivers and the difficulty in apportioning blame when there are no independent witnesses to an accident mean that anything a motorist can do to protect themselves, their car and their driving record can only be a good thing.

For the uninitiated, a black box camera drive recorder such as Prestigio Road Runner 520 is an in-car digital video/data recorder, camera and GPS that operates much like an aircraft’s black box data recorder would. Mounted to the windscreen it records video, GPS, audio and other sensor data continuously in a loop whenever the vehicle ignition is on. The data is saved to a memory card inserted into the unit.

The beauty of the system is this endless loop of data which ensures that it is always active and recording everything, a quick press of the button will save the file currently being recorded at that point and prevent it from being over written.

As the unit contains a GPS receiver, it doesn’t only saves the video stream, it also attaches the GPS location data that has been captured which includes vehicle speed and direction whilst an integral microphone records audio (this can be disabled if desired). Software supplied with the unit allows you to locate and review the video files recorded on the memory card and replay them alongside a Google map showing the vehicle location, speed.

Installation is a simple matter. Affix the supplied mount to the windscreen, attach the Prestigio Road Runner 520 unit to the fully adjustable mount. Power is supplied via the supplied cigarette lighter power lead and, as it accepts a 12v/24v feed, you can hard wire into your vehicle if you prefer. For that you would need to use a suitable fused feed but it’s a simple job that anyone competent in vehicle electrics could do cheaply and easily.

The most difficult part is routing the power cable to the DC-1. It has to be located high up on the windscreen that means the cable has to pass up the A-pillar and around the edge of the windscreen. The cable is small enough to be tucked under the door seal rubber though and, although it took some time, I was able to route mine such that it’s hidden.

Helpfully the cable is very long and there is more than enough supplied to allow for a run around the windscreen frame, down an A-pillar and under the dash to the centre console or fuse box.

In use

When the ignition is switched on, the Road Runner 520 starts up automatic and no interaction is needed. When you switch off the ignition the unit is powered down.

Major insurer offers drivers a 10% discount on car cover if they use a ‘dashcam’ to record footage from their front window

Swiftcover will offer a discount from today for those using a dashcam

The recording devices are already widely used in the US and Russia

Aviva says one in nine third party injury claims are fraudulent

April 2014 – A major insurer has become the first in Britain to offer reduced premiums if motorists choose to use a dashcam inside their car to help settle claims quicker.

Swiftcover.com says new customers can claim a 10 per cent discount if they purchase one of these video camera devices and place it on the dashboard to film the driver’s view.

The insurer believes dashcams will significantly improve supporting evidence for its policyholders and allow it to prove liability in claims where this is disputed.

It says it will save customers £33 per year on average. Swiftcover said that a motorist involved in an accident that wasn’t their fault could go on to save hundreds of pounds more by preserving their no claims discount and saving on their insurance excess, with help of footage.

Dashcams should allow the insurer to settle claims for its policyholders more quickly, as video evidence would speed up the often lengthy process of establishing liability.

Dashcams are widely used internationally, especially in Russia and the US. They are becoming more popular in Britain too, with sales of the devices increasing by 28 per cent between October and December 2013 according to one online retailer.

Swiftcover believes this incentive will contribute to a significant increase in dashcam use in the UK over the next year, and encourage responsible driving.

Roman Bryl, product manager at Swiftcover, said: ‘Reducing the cost of premiums for responsible motorists is what every insurer should be doing.

‘We believe that by using a dashcam and being able to accurately and quickly establish who was at fault, we will save money and therefore motorists will significantly benefit from lower premiums and more responsible driving.’

When taking out insurance, if the policyholder ticks yes to owning and using a dashcam, they will receive an automatic discount.

The insurer then expects the driver to send any video evidence if involved in an accident.

If a customer says they have a dashcam to claim the discount when this is not the case, Swiftcover says this is fraud and would be treated as such.

It added that there is no contractual obligation to submit dashcam footage – however, it will usually be in the customer’s best interest to do so.

Dashcam devices can be pricy. The estimated £33 saving for one year, calculated using the average premium and excess of a typical Swiftcover customer, would be largely accounted for by the price of the device.

Drivers cannot use smartphone such as an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy to record the footage.

This is Money found an example of a dashcam for sale via online retailer Amazon for £25.95 which Swiftcover says can be used to claim the discount.

Dashcams are different to telematics – or blackbox – insurance, often used by younger drivers. This uses GPS to track their whereabouts, whereas a dashcam only records video footage.
