I bought this for my wife so she could watch TV and Facebook at the same time. She had a tablet that was nearing the end of it life and kept complaining she kept getting kicked off line. My son (Computer Scientist) did some research and suggested this one was a good deal for the price. The headline says the rest.

Good device, great value, laptop and tablet needs met to large degree, April 20, 2016

    By Greg Fulkerson

This review is from: RCA Viking Pro 10″ 2-in-1 Tablet 32GB Quad Core Charcoal Laptop Computer with Touchscreen and Detachable Keyboard Google Android 5.0 Lollipop (Personal Computers)

This is a very good budget tablet that comes with a useful and very functional keyboard that makes it work much like a laptop. It is good for work and better for fun. I will go through a few of the key talking points below that inform my rating:

Responsiveness: at first I was a little unhappy with it, and I saw other reviews comment on this issue. I discovered a setting adjustment that helps to improve screen responsiveness. Go to Settings>Language and Input>Pointer Speed. There is a slider that is probably in the middle. If you slide it to the right, the touch screen becomes far more responsive. I am much happier after this adjustment. The default setting requires a harder touch, and some people prefer this (I assume).

Keyboard: I can type fast on this keyboard, as with a laptop. However, the right side shift key used to make capital letters is reduced in size in order to make room for the page up button, and I often hit this key causing my typing to move to a higher point in my document and this is frustrating. I have to slow down to make sure I do not make this mistake. Other than that, as I said, typing is nearly as fast as a full laptop or desktop keyboard for me. The keys feel solid, unlike the cloth keyboard that comes with some of the surface tablet models (I had the first generation and hated the keyboard).

Productivity: Since I was able to install microsoft office, I can use this tablet as a fairly worthy stand-in for my work computer. I would be comfortable relying on this for most office related tasks and as a college professor, I have many. I would need a back up for heavy lifting, when I have several windows and programs open at once such as statistical programs I use, but this works great for lighter lifting work. I do not see the statistical programs here I need, and they pull me back to the Windows platform. I was pleased to find that I could print with ease after installing the HP printing apps that work with my wifi printer.

Gaming. The ability to play games depends on what games you like. I have an xbox for serious game playing, but I play star wars commander, words with friends, and a few others without too much problem on the Viking. I do see a few crashes with star wars–see my RAM comments.

Memory. I have noticed the limited 1 GB RAM of the device sometimes leads to app crashes. It is not often enough to ruin the general operation of the device. I recommend closing unused apps while working or trying to play a game, in order to prevent crashes.

Storage. At 32 GB, I find storage to be quite ample. I have over 100 apps installed and lots of room to spare. I use onedrive to store my stuff, so I do not rely on large storage to house personal files. Hey, ask yourself how much a 32 GB ipad costs :).

Operating System. Android Lollipop has been solid for me on this device. I am generally a windows guy, but the ubiquity of android and ios has forced microsoft to offer many of their products on these platforms, and importantly for me, that means MS Office. I am very impressed with the range and selection of apps in the google play store and this is a huge plus.

Battery. I had low expectations as this is a budget device, and that usually means worse battery life. My wife’s ipad is a total rock star on battery, but I could buy three vikings and when the battery dies on one I would have two more! Kidding aside, the battery is pretty good on this actually, and exceeded my expectations. I recommend powering down the device, charging, and unplugging after a few hours if you are not going to use it. It does take a while to charge. I usually get several hours of use, even with some gaming mixed in.

Value. If you want top of the line, get ready to shell out several hundred to over 1000 dollars. That gets you the best battery life, screen resolution, memory, storage, and performance. This device costs about a tenth of the highest end tablet/laptop hybrids. Sure the camera is bad, the battery is “good” not “great,” the screen is pretty but not stunning, the ram and performance are fine and at times annoying, the storage is impressive. Overall, you will probably find the occasional headache to justify the cost as I have. I like budget devices and own two smart phones, a tablet, a desktop, a game console, and a laptop that total less than 1000 dollars. How can any one device replace all that? If money is no issue, then ignore my post completely and buy a galaxy tab or ipad.

For The Price? A Few Issues But Not Bad., May 5, 2016

By Jesse Magee (In The Desert)

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This review is from: RCA Viking Pro 10″ 2-in-1 Tablet 32GB Quad Core Charcoal Laptop Computer with Touchscreen and Detachable Keyboard Google Android 5.0 Lollipop (Personal Computers)

I spent my own money and no one gave me a discount or any consideration for writing this review. If anyone WANTS to give me free stuff to write reviews I’ll definitely consider it, however.

After spending about four hours playing around and setting up my new RCA Viking Pro 10″ Tablet, here are a few thoughts.
-The ten inch size is quite nice compared to the 8 inch I’ve had previously.
-The screen isn’t fantastic, but the image quality is overall just fine.
-The version of Android 5.0 that RCA uses on this is surprisingly free of bloatware. Walmart/Sams Club and VUDUare the only “useless” apps that are present, and those are easily removable.
-Setup was simple without having to go through a lot of hassle. Wifi connected straight away, Bluetooth connected quickly. I’m not seeing any lag time changing screens or apps.
-The keyboard is surprisingly well made and the latch to connect screen to keyboard is MUCH beefier than I expected.
-After reading all the reviews of the cameras on this device I was expecting them to be much worse. I didn’t buy these expecting hi-def and they most certainly aren’t but the rear camera will certainly work well enough for a quick snap. The front facing camera isn’t very good, but it’s certainly functional as well.
-I’ve added all my “must have” apps and a few testing apps that require a lot of horsepower to operate and thus far they have all worked. I have seen one or two apps in the store that don’t run, but I believe that has to do with tablet compatibility more than device compatibility issues. But for me it’s doing what I want it to do.
-The touch pad works pretty well but could use an input button. There is also no way to turn off the touchpad functionality, so if you are a person who types with your hands resting this may be an issue for you.
-This tablet will charge through USB BUT WILL NOT CONNECT TO A PC! I’m absolutely floored that there is no way to transfer files via USB onto this tablet. It’s not a deal breaker because it does read USB thumb drives and externally powered disc drives. And there are wireless solutions available as well, but direct USB connection seems like a basic function.
-It could be consider both a pro and a con but I find the USB connections to be EXTREMELY stiff and difficult to connect to. I assume this will improve over time.
-As I stated earlier the keyboard functions well and seems well made but for some reason the layout is designed with the right shift key placed in a very awkward position (see photo). Oddly the left shift is in the normal position and size. This layout makes it almost inevitable that you will hit the “.com” shortcut key instead of the shift. In the future RCA should consider swapping the shift and the “.com” keys.
-It would be VERY nice if the manufacturer would spend a few more cents and make the power cord 5-6 feet instead of 38 inches.
-The one solitary speaker on the tablet is pretty wretched. Very tinny. I would advise external speakers or headphones.
-One thing I would like to stress is that the manual states to make sure to hold the power button down until you see the RCA logo come up on the screen. I gave the power button a quick tap (less than a second) and it resulted in the screen powering on but no function from the unit. I had to press and hold the power button for a number of seconds before the screen powered down and I could restart the unit. I would imagine others have done this and thought the tablet had gone non-operable. MAKE SURE to hold down the power button when starting!

I tend to shop and compare quite a bit when I’m about to make a purchase, particularly when it comes to electronics. I was looking for a low end tablet for occasional use when away from home. For the price the RCA Viking 10″ 2-in-1 is quite a good deal. It’s not a high end tablet, it’s not going to perform as well as a high end tablet. But if you are looking for something economical and functional it looks like this one is hard to beat IF the cons I’ve outlined above aren’t dealbreakers for you.

The real question at this point is going to be reliability. Time will tell. I will come back and do an update to this review after I’ve had more time and real world testing on it.

EDIT: 10/02/16 – After five months of use and a cross country trip here are a few more thoughts.

As I said earlier, do NOT expect an expensive tablet if you purchase this! I’ve noticed some slowing and odd behavior but for the most part it’s done what I’ve expected. I can watch video, some light web browsing, email and some low requirement games. The biggest disappointment and shock was finding out that this table cannot be connected to a computer for file transfer unless you purchase a proprietary cable from RCA…for an additional $20. That is RIDICULOUS! And took one star away…
