Elginshire Constabulary – 1912 Grantown Sergeant
1,000 views on 24th December 2013

Grantown-on-Spey (Scottish Gaelic: Baile Ùr nan Granndach = New Town of Grant) is a town in the Highland Council Area in Scotland. It was founded in 1765 as a planned settlement on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorm mountains, about 20 miles South East of Inverness (35 miles by road).

It is the main town in what was the ecclesiastical (and later civil) parish of "Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie" formed by the union of the same-named parishes in the 16th century. It was formerly in the county of Moray, until the 1860s being partly within a detached portion of Inverness-shire. From 1898 to 1975 it was a burgh in Morayshire before being subsumed into the Badenoch and Strathspey district of the Highland Region.

Thus in 1975 the lovely and picturesque town of Grantown – along with the adjacent Parish of Cromdale – became part of the new Northern Constabulary area. From 1840 it had been policed by the Elginshire (later Morayshire) Constabulary, which became Moray & Nairn Constabulary in 1930 and then the Scottish North Eastern Counties Constabulary (“SNECC”) in 1948.

This photograph appears to be of the procession to a major event, entering the venue park. The chances are it is either the Agricultural Show or Highland Games, since Grantown boasts both. Traditionally such events are held on the same day each year. This photograph (now a post card) was taken by Mr A Ledingham, a Grantown photographer, is postmarked (Monday) 12th August 1912. So it is likely it was produced at an event which occurred the previous week, which would make it the Grantown Show, held on the second Thursday in August (the 8th in 1912). The Highland Games is held later in the same month.

The procession (complete with a small group of pipers) is preceded by the Police Sergeant, who would have been in charge of the Grantown Area, and he is clearly taking no chances, having his raincoat slung over his shoulder. Back in those days, the entire Grantown police establishment would likely have been one Sergeant and 1 Constable, with one or maybe two other Constables located in the small villages in the hinterland of Strathspey. An event such as this would have required the entire police strength to be deployed around the Town, and – given the number of gentry apparently in attendance – the Chief Constable or his Deputy would likely have put in an appearance too. Since the event would continue with one or more marquee dances in the evening, at which all the locals would undoubtedly attend, the policing of the area would entail one very long day (and night) for all officers!

Such events, whether Game, Show, Gatherings or whatever title, took place – and still do – all over the Highlands & Islands every summer, and provided – inter alia – an opportunity for the police to interact socially with the community.

The only good thing would be that the whole place would become extremely quiet for a day or two afterwards as everybody recovered from their exertions of the day!

This concept – community policing – is one which the police service in the Highlands & Islands cherished,. Until fairly recently the local police officer occupied a police station house in the village, and thus lived among the local community. Recent changes in the law pertaining to police officers, mean they are no longer entitled to a police house – and thus cannot be directed to live in one – and so the officers find their own private accommodation, not necessarily in the area which they police. As an economy measure, most police houses and many (smaller) police stations have been disposed of – as maintenance of the buildings was a considerable expense to the force. Officers nowadays work as a team from a larger station, covering multiple beats as one, rather than each officer predominantly operating independently in his/her own wee beat.

I am very grateful to 301 for the copy of the postcard from his collection.

In 1878 the Burgh of Grantown was the scene of one of the only two instances in what later became the Northern Constabulary area (now the Highlands & Islands Area of Police Scotland) where a police officer was murdered on duty. PC James Fraser, Elginshire Constabulary, attended at the Grant Arms Hotel to deal with a disturbance caused by a man (Andrew Grainger) suffering from Delirium Tremens (the DTs). Mr Grainger a well-to-do cattle dealer had been removed from the train because of his condition and, as he was known and respected locally, was placed in a hotel room to sleep it off. Unfortunately his condition appears to have worsened and he began trashing the room. Grainger was known to PC Fraser who reckoned he could reason with him. Unfortunately however such was Grainger’s state of mind that as PC Fraser squeezed through the partially barricaded door of the hotel room, Grainger stabbed the officer with a knife, causing irreparable injuries from which PC Fraser died two days later.

Game Disregards Rules – Robotic Players Are Inept, June 19, 2016

In my opinion this is truly pathetic software. I am not so much concerned with the rudimentary quality of the cartoon characters. More importantly I was expecting card playing that follows the program’s own stated rules, and artificial intelligence that plays reasonably well.

This software fails miserably on both counts. My particular concern is with Bridge. Regarding Hearts, I simply cannot believe how dumb the robotic players are. I can win at its Hearts game by attempting to “Shoot the Moon” with almost any hand. The bots are completely complicit in allowing me to be successful.

I bought three copies of this software six months ago. One was for me and two for Christmas presents. I am embarrassed to have been a donor. When I complained to the company back then, the same PR guy who responds to reviews here asked be to become in essence a much belated beta tester. I have not heard anymore from him regarding that. If I do, I will decline, since in my opinion this mess is a total waste of anyone’s time.

I just got the Hoyle Official Card Games Collection a day or so ago. I am very happy with it. I wanted it mostly because it had the game of Bridge on it. I hadn’t played the game in years and thought I had better hone my skills with a computer game. The first day I got it, I spent 4 hours just playing Bridge. I was almost cross-eyed afterwards but it was worth it. It’s very easy to install. Just slip the CD in once you get the card games and follow the simple instructions of downloading it. It jast takes a few minutes. It’s pretty much self-explanatory after that. Some reviews I read about it complained about the resolution of the “newest edition” (this one) but I don’t have a problem with it. To me, it was worth the purchase. I think the ultimate card player would like to buy this product.

  3. Great story and image Dave!

I hate this new version., November 11, 2016

While I LOVED the 2012 version, I hate this version that works with Windows 10. This version doesn’t have a short grey hair option in the face creator so my character looks nothing like me. It doesn’t have two deck partner pinochle; doesn’t have the cute characters for GO Fish. In fact, I can’t even pick my partner. This is just not user friendly in any way. I don’t like Windows 10 not the least because I can’t use my old Hoyle cards. Hoyle needs to fix this mess. The lips don’t even sinc with the words. Later versions are suppose to improve the product. This is light years back. Hoyle 2010 was better than this.

  5. Great stuff…a distant better time
